FFM #3 2026: Interrupted Sleep

We return briefly to the Selkies' Skins universe, sometime in Kirsty's first year of teaching.

July 3 2026

LadyRainStarDrago AKA Teresa “Amehana” Garcia

Kirsty stretched, then turned over in her bed. Her arm reached out and only found her cat. Blue eyes slowly slitted open in the pre-dawn light.

Right, work day. In the castle where her aunt specifically requested no hanky-panky. Why did they opt for rooms in the castle itself instead of getting a house nearby or one out the outbuildings like Thomas and Ally, also professors, did?

When was the sale of the place she and David wanted to be expected to finish again?

Definitely a coffee day.

“Mroooooowww...” The large white fluff ball complained and balled up.

“Me too… Me too...” Kirsty blinked and focused with difficulty on the window.

Why was she awake before her alarm? David would still be sleeping, probably, in his own bed. Surely. She snorted, discovering that some part of her did hope for some romantic gesture from her husband like showing up on the broom balcony tapping at the window for morning kisses before the breakfast that would bolster him for his Potions class and her for her Merstudies students.

Nope. No David through the glass. Not in his human self, not the ravenperson thing that had figured so much in their last year of school she knew he’d been working on, no hippogriff form for early morning flights… and definitely no sedated werewolf.

Be big problems if she woke up finding her sedated werewolf on her broom balcony instead of where he sequestered himself to hunt and snooze during his transformation. Problems coffee wouldn’t fix.

“The horrors persisted because you never did anything to stop them.” Kirsty quoted to herself, sighing deeply. “Right then. Early start to my day it is.” She slid out of her bed, her familiar complaining again at the retreat of her warmth. Her gauzy white sleeping gown billowed as she made her way to her dressing table. Not that her husband was there to be impressed by it since he was in his own room, and if he’d seen her yawn wracked stumbles he’d probably have gotten her back in bed and asleep with that strange pull she’d never figured out in all these years she’d known him. Definitely none of the hanky-panky – either sort – they’d been warned of when hired.

“Coffee… strong, sweet, on the non-acid end. Blond roast. Stomach isn’t ready for the dark.” She placed her order, willing a connection, still too sleepy to conjure it herself and relying on the kitchen’s magics to pick up on and deliver the request. Being a professor, especially at such a young age, definitely had perks not available to her when she was just a student hiding what she was. “Ah, some eel and egg on toast to see me over til Breakfast is ready too, please.”

She felt the acknowledging pulse on the other end of the connection. Whoever was on watch so early had received her request. Absolutely no way she felt like making her way down all those flights of stairs to go directly bother the cooks. Nope. That would be like mixing up a lemon and a danger fruit.

“Stairs...” She sighed, slumping against the dressing table and drawing her sealskin better around her shoulders over her sleep gown. Distantly she felt the tide, the call of the sea. She would need another swim in the loch soon. “I hope you slept better than I seem to have, David.”

Her coffee and eggy fishy toast apparated before her, prepared just the way she liked it. A little pickled slivered seaweed garnished her toast, telling her exactly which of the crew had received the request. Her lips curved upward gently. The coffee was a velvet and sweet as she needed it for such an early start, the caffeine strong and without the changes that bothered her on super early mornings. Comfort and strength began filling out her limbs, giving her back the closest thing she’d ever have to land legs.

The time for the Hunt was approaching, soon. Perhaps she could throw a salmon at David should she see him on the shore during his. He could share it with the wolf pack Hearne had drawn into his life, perhaps. Doubtful he and his pack would leave her any venison on the shore… but she did feel as much of the pull to them as she did to the merfolk in the loch. Not something that had a word in any language, something spanning species. Not kinship, per se, and not a caretaker role… But… something…

Another sip. Another bite. Her thoughts turned to how best to guide the young souls she must shape in her Merstudies lessons. How best to serve Mara, goddess of the sea, The Lady, still with pieces of her name missing and goddess of the land’s waters, and Hearne, lord of the Hunt? What should she do today, in their service?

“Waking up more would be a good start.” The Lady’s voice curled in her ear. “I had a memory. It may lead to another Piece.” The steam of the coffee caressed Kirsty’s face. “Sleepy selkies have scattered thoughts.”

“Mmm, so that’s why I’m awake so early. Might need two cups. Too early.”

Art Process & story: Celestial Companions (from the Selkies' Skins universe)

This is a little late posting here, but this was the last piece that I did for this year's Mermay. I am particularly pleased how this fully digital piece created on my iPad turned out, and eventually will be producing it as a poster. Here, in this video, you can watch the time-lapse of the art process. You can also listen to the short story, expounding a bit more of the lore in my Selkies' Skins related books' universe.

Ame's Art Desk: Kirsty full seal form (Selkies' Skins Character Art)

This is character art for Kirsty McKay, a half selkie/half-human-witch from my Selkies' Skins books and short stories. Here she is in full seal form hunting fish, her hunger distracting her from her original purpose. It's ok, it wasn't anything pressing. It's still counted as exercising the form to keep her muscles built up! Unseen in this image is the ring mark on her left ring "finger" she gained in her adulthood after marrying David Valnarius. With that in mind this could serve as an image of her at any time after she gained the twining woad color markings on her left wrist that stay with her in any of the forms she's managed to learn to take or are inherent to her.

This was done as someone close to me (you know who you are!) had been asking for more selkies and Kirsty art. I hope that you and he both enjoy watching the time-lapse process of creating this piece. I've not chosen a recording program yet for trying to capture things in real-time, although I have been considering trying to use a camera and boom.

This was done on my iPad with my iPencil in Procreate. I haven't unboxed the special grip yet which I plan to do a test and review of. I'm still recovering from Tax Season.

The manuscript for book two, Selkies' Skins: Temple and Skinquest, is still being finished before final edits will take place. The first book of the series, Selkies' Skins: Castle and Well, is available on Amazon and many other platforms. I have several other books available as well so feel free to check out my Linktree or the other links below to find them.

Sorry, I'm not the Teresa Garcia from the news channel that I keep finding when I run a curiosity check on my name. I'm just the Teresa Garcia author that writes under my name (not a pen name) and illustrates under Teresa Amehana Garcia and LadyRainStarDragon or LadyRainStarDrago. It would be interesting to meet the news lady though. That must be an interesting job.

Mara's Seas: A Selkies' Skins Coloring and Lore Book

This is not the second book in the Selkies' Skins series that people have been waiting for, but an adjunct to the series.

Mara's Seas: A Selkies' Skins Based Mermay (Mermay2020) Inspired Coloring and Lore Book
Written by Teresa Garcia
Illustrated as Teresa Amehana Garcia

Different covers were needed for different venues.

This is a coloring book and set of short stories wherein the artwork was created during and for the annual Mermay challenge (in this case, Mermay2020) and drawn mostly as a visual expansion to the world in my Selkies' Skins series of novels. I wished to draw mostly non-traditional merfolk. You will find depictions of merfolk both mammalian and fish. The various species of merfolk do not always share our human views of body covering. In my world when they wear clothing it is more for ceremonial reasons. Male, female, and even some that are intersexed because of their type are in these pages. There are tells for those that are more mammalian in type. Certain body parts are not present and the eyes of children have been kept in mind. It is on the order of a National Geographic episode for those that need a comparison.

This is created more with teens and adults in mind, but there is nothing objectional if one keeps in mind that these are nonhuman entities among the fae.

Some who know me from my books and short stories will note that an extra name is included. I write under Teresa Garcia and illustrate under Teresa Amehana Garcia. If you wish to know more about the world of Selkies’ Skins then Selkies’ Skins: Castle and Well is the first book of Kirsty’s skinquest. There are several side and short stories as well as a prequel available. The second book of that series is currently in progress. The other series available and which crosses over in places are my Dragon Shaman books. At some future point I hope to finally have The Shadow Chronicles ready to join these.

I hope you enjoy coloring these 32 coloring spaces and reading the explanations and stories that accompany them. Size is 5.5 by 8.5 inches.

New Thing! Selktember will start in 2020.

Selktember prompts

Selktember is similar to Mermay, Inktober, and Drawlloween. I have not seen any prompts lists focusing on just selkies, so I felt it time. Selktember will contain a prompt for every day in September and can be used for poetry, art, stories of any length, or even music clips. Whatever your mode of creative expression, use it! Post to your favorite place for your works and then tweet the link. Please use the tags below to help others find it.

The first official Selktember will start in 2020

You'll be able to find the prompts when it is time to start by visiting the Selkies' Skins webnovel archive at https://teresagarciaserials.weebly.com/selktember.html or here on the publishing blog.

Flash Fiction Fridays #9: Playfulness (A Selkies' Skins short story reading)

What if a man that courts and marries a selkie never takes her skin away but instead lets her wear or leave it as she pleases? What happens if he decides the skin needs company as much as he does? What could go wrong... or right?

"Playfulness" by Teresa Garcia (myself) centers around what life at Seal Point is like for David Valnarius after he and Kirsty Makay graduate from school and begin their lives together. The story of how Kirsty gains her skin is being told by the "Selkies' Skins" series of books. Book two is currently an ongoing project.

A fan sent me a copy of a Ballad about the Mari Lwyd to read. I have not had the chance to sit down with it, but it is in my two read and to record list. As it is not my own writing I'll need time to write up at least some discussion points for it.

Illya Leonov needs help with medical bills

I am slower than I'd like to be in getting this posted to various places. I have been juggling a lot today and it hasn't been going well in getting everything done that was intended for the day.

The narrator of "Selkies' Skins: Castle and Well" and "Pearls of Sea and Stone: Book of Seals" is having medical problems and very greatly needs some help. He is a very good friend and I consider him in the manner of another father figure. Illya Leonov, AKA Morgan Freepony is a man that tries to do things on his own and then take care of everyone else. So for him to even START a Gofundme tells me he is having more problems with it than he was willing to admit. He could use some help. If you can toss some help toward his medical bills that is positively fabulous and please do. If you can't afford to please share the heck out of his Gofundme to help it circulate and hopefully find people that can. He's done so much for us as a storyteller narrating things for our enjoyment.

As of right now a glance at his page shows that the deductible itself has been raised but the end goal is $5,000 that he will need help with.

Flash Fiction Fridays: "Trade" and "Fish Army"

Fish Army was last week's written flash fiction posted to my Patreon. You can listen to it being read here in this video.

This week's written flash fiction is "Trade" from within the world of Selkies' Skins in a different time and location. This flash fiction touches on the seal folk. Long ago a Patron and friend asked for a tale of selkies in a Native American milieu. This is a long awaited glimpse into the life of one of the seal folk somewhere on the Eastern coast of America.

Flash Fiction: Trade

Waves crashed against her rock, froth spraying up to dampen her. The sun was warm here, though the ever present sea breeze did what it could to take the warmth away. Beside her spread out her skin to bake to let the oils seep in to fur and flesh. Her dreams whispered. Eyes watched her from the shore before slipping tentatively into canoes. She smiled as she watched them and sang sweetly. So long as they minded themselves she did not mind calling forth the fish. She liked to watch them toss their nets and spears. Safety traded for food.

Project Updates

Mythical Minstrelsy
Within a week we should be seeing the print edition of Mythical Minstrelsy, volume 1 (the 2015-2016 volume) hitting Amazon. It will take a few days longer generally for the print edition to link to the ebook edition. Hopefully soon I will be able to have layout ready for volume 2 print and ebook as I try to catch up my own backlog (so many projects get prioritized over my own writings). I will post again once I see that it has become available.

Illustrations
In other news I am working on color for panels 11 through 15 of the Starr Family's Ice Cream Creation with PenIt! Publications. After the completion of that children's book project I will begin the art for the next Moey book, also with that publishing house.

Selkies' Skins
I champ at the bit to get back to the current volume of the series.

The Ian's Realm Saga Trilogy
Work is still ongoing with getting clean tracks for the audiobook version of D.L. Gardner's classic book. It has not been as quiet nor as calm a summer as I needed for the rerecording of the chapters.

Dragon Hearts RPG
There have been a few delays in getting to writing the second part of the current split questline. I need to check in the work tickets to see if the gamesite owner/coder has had a change to work on the code for the first part of this installment in Fetu's saga and if anything is ready for testing.

Dragonmas has come to Dragon Hearts

The world of Dragon Hearts crosses over with the world of the Dragon Shaman books as well as the Selkies' Skins books. References are hidden in my books for those knowing what to look for. Thus it seems appropriate to post this here as I am the quest and event writer (though not the coder) for the site.

Dragonmas has hit DH. Dragonclaws, our dear Saint Nicoclaws needs some help up at the North Pole. Fetu is screwing up the balance though! Who will win the battle for Dragonmas? This may or may not result in new lore for future years on the site. Can you afford not to help in the battle? Prizes go out after the end of the event.

Current score as of Ame's last logout:
Fetu: 479 VS Dragonclaws: 856

Some old art for "The Shadow Chronicles"

While looking for images to represent the three series that the Hounds world building essay is for I came across this image of Angelina (whose Cowan name is Willow Sanchez) that was done for use with "The Shadow Chronicles" by The Ingram for Solstice of 1999. Here Angelina is crowned as Great Shadow, having been awakened to being the reincarnation of the founder of an order in a whole other world than her own and manifestation of the Creator Goddess of that world. This is a very long way from the Cowan Willow Sanchez, who could never figure out why her father became so jumpy whenever magic was brought up and was raised in a normal US home, going to a normal backwoods public school, and brought to the knowledge that magic was real by visits from Singing Serpent, white dragon of Mount Shasta and her past incarnation's advisor Flightessa, a two legged sphinx.

This and images for "Dragon Shaman" and "Selkies' Skins" will be incorporated into the in Second Life image for my essay, to provide the link from the Astral Sector Alpha Art Fair in the quarter sim plot in Calm Ocean.

I will provide a slurl link for the art fair once I have the landmark for the location.

Later I am going to find time to archive some old scans of old drafts of the first novel for "The Shadow Chronicles" for those in my Patreon. I believe those old works will stay Patron Only.

World Building: The Hounds, On Patreon for Patrons

I recently finished gathering together all of my thoughts on the Hounds of Hearne, werewolves in general, and the other Hounds in the shared world of Selkies' Skins, Dragon Shaman, and The Shadow Chronicles. Some of this will later be made public, but not all of it. I do want to keep some things as insider bits for patrons, at least until all of the series are complete to my satisfaction.

This essay HAS been submitted to Astral Sector Alpha's multi discipline Art Expo as an example of world building behind the scenes work. It may be read live by myself or a volunteer at the reading portion, but I need to find out again what day and time that will be. Astral Sector Alpha currently resides in Calm Ocean, in a plot with looks rather similar in my opinion to how Seal Point looked at one point in it's history. I have absolutely no idea if that was the intent, as everyone was in a rather piratey mood when the move from Computer was made.

Selkies' Skins: Castle and Well print cover reveal

The art for the print edition's cover was delivered to me on the 17th, St Paddy's day. There have been a few complications at home that slowed getting the text elements laid onto it...but it is ready and the proof will be on the way very soon.

For those that would like a poster version of the artwork without the bookcover's textual elements, it is available on Zazzle to purchase for $19.90. Proceeds from any sales of the poster art will be split between myself and the artist, Samantha Buckley.

Selkies' Skins #1: Castle and Well ebook release

Today is the long awaited (finally) release day for the ebook editions of the first book in the "Selkies' Skins" series, "Castle and Well." The print edition is still awaiting receipt of the cover art from Samantha Buckley, but it is hoped that it will arrive soon.

Kirsty has little choice in her fate, only how it will manifest. There are tests to pass, a place that she may have to occupy prematurely if her visions prove true, and a need to earn her sealskin to be complete. Will Etain return safe to port, and will Kirsty survive her training and test? There are complications along the way, will she be able to stay on the course she's trying to set? In this first book of what is intended to be a trilogy Kirsty must ultimately go down the Lady's well for the first of her tests of fitness, while also having to balance school, family, and a certain young lad.

For additional side stories, please look in the Selkies' Skins Wavelets stories.

It is also author Teresa Garcia's birthday today. On the 13th was author Marantha D. Jenelle's (she is missed) and also cover artist Victoria "Salaiek" Davis.

Selkies #1 Progress

After a lot of fighting with formatting (I still can't figure out why some of the formats fail conversion sometimes but will go through others). I have .epub, .mobi, and .pdf version of Selkies' Skins (book one): Castle and Well up on Smashwords. If I can figure out why the other formats won't work then I will find a way to make those available. I begin to suspect though that it may have something to do with special letters necessary in some of the words. I may have to do direct orders from the publishing website for some formats, which will require some time to have a discussion with our webmaster about how to go about implementing that. It was something I had been pondering doing anyway at some point other than email orders.

Closer to publish time I will get it up direct onto Amazon for Kindle. First I want to send out the ones that the Kickstarter backers get for their patience and funding assistance.

I am still waiting for the print edition's cover from Samantha Buckley. Once I have that in hand I can finish up the print edition and get that sent out to the distribution venues. Her art is more dynamic than the ebook edition's cover art (which was contributed to by my daughter) and I look forward to being able to showcase it.

Selkies' News

While we are still waiting on the cover art for the print edition of the book, I have scheduled the release of the ebook edition with the ebook's cover for March 16th, my birthday. Cross your fingers, this was originally planned for December/January release. Those that participated in the Kickstarter and chose an ebook as their preferred method of reading/delivery will have their copies in the next few weeks. I am still hoping for the print edition's cover art to be done soon so that I can include the front of that in the file.

The print edition will be ready as soon as Samantha is able to deliver her art to me. My apologies to everyone that has been waiting for so long, as we are several weeks behind schedule for release due to life events. However, be cheered that Illya Leonov is making good and fast progress on the audio edition.

Selkies' Skins audiobook, it progresseth!

Selkies Skins Book One: Castle and Well is being voiced by Illya Leonov, and the first two chapters are recorded. I am really pleased with how the story sounds as read, and there are some really big treats already in just these first two. I am very looking forward to the whole book being completed.

Selkies' Skins #1 (Castle and Well) proof copy incoming

The first physical proof for the print edition of Selkies' Skins book one (Castle and Well) has been ordered and is expected to arrive around January 14th. This first proof does not have the official print cover art on it. I am still waiting for Samantha Buckley to be able to work on that. However while waiting if we go through the interior data that means that the ebook edition will be out that much faster.
Interior art for the print and ebook edition include and excerpt from a fanart cover that was done by Marantha D. Jenelle a short time before she crossed over, as well as two pieces done for the divider pages by myself. These will be in both print and ebook editions, the ebook edition being in color for those that have color enabled readers or reading via computer.
Work on the second half of Kirsty's skinquest story has begun.

Selkies' Skins Prequel information

The prequel story for the "Selkies' Skins" series will be available on Smashwords (and through other outlets as well) December 1st. This is not one that is currently available to read on the archive site.

In "Pearls of Sea and Stone: Book of Seals" we will join the half-selkie witch Kirsty Makay as she peruses an ancient manuscript that has been hidden in the Castle Carrick library for centuries. What will she learn by reading the book, and will any of it ultimately prepare her for when she is to begin her skinquest trials or for her priestess initiations?

For now this will only be available in e-copy.
