FFM #5 2026: All Before Her Tea

The dragoness moved through the shrine on two feet, drifting with the gentleness of morning mist in her human guise. The red and white of her miko shōzoku glowed in the early morning beneath Amaterasu’s rays. Amehana’s steps wove from the residential hall of her family to the Honden where her own mirror, similar in some ways to Amaterasu’s, dwelled.

Amehana inhaled deeply, allowing the scents of the gardens and the lingering overnight incense seeping from the various subshrines to permeate her lungs. Having not yet had her morning tea and rice she fed instead on the elemental energies around her. Food would be there when she was done. Their son and daughter were grown, the boy in his father’s old position as guard at the Youkaimura gate, the girl in the kitchen performing the duties of lesser miko and preparing the morning food offerings. Something she herself had not had to do now for… centuries?

Time was hard to hold onto now. She now easily understood why the elder kami could no longer keep track of it, not even her own father.

The Storm Shrine rose before her and she ascended the steps after leaving her geta to the side of the stairs. As usual, with each step she felt the separation between herself and the plane of living normal life was in grow, thankfully not to the degree her thread to physicality would snap again. Making bodies to inhabit was not something she wished to do today. Her hand slid open the doors, and the light of sun and moon (wherever Tsukiyomi currently was) lightly struck the surface of the Storm Mirror.

“Arashi Kagami,” she intoned softly.

“Arashi Amehana Hoshitatsu Tenryū Himemikokami.” Her mirror intoned in return.

They flowed the energy between them peacefully, parts of a whole joining in similar fashion to how her mate had long ago healed the two main halves of her separated incarnation. She allowed her consciousness to release the final few trappings of incarnated life and spread itself out among the local storm systems and then reach beyond, touching up against the other remaining storm dragons of her clan around the world… withdrawing whenever feeling the seeking energy of her clan’s rival.

After all these centuries, they still sought her? A married woman? A very happily married woman with no intention of giving up her kitsune? She snorted. Gathering the news and state of the worlds was more important than dealing with such petty concerns. If found, she’d deal with it. Then probably bewilder her mate again, just because she enjoyed –

There, a dissonance.

Her consciousness congealed above a facility far from human, yet firmly in the human world. Here, she took the form of a roughly dragon shaped serpentine cloud, her five toes per hand and foot, six wings, and prehensile tail plume each splayed wide to maintain the hold.

Perhaps she should have had tea first after all.

Below her sprawled a small compound of strangely shaped buildings seemingly grown from the plant and mineral life around them. Vines and trees intertwined with spires of crystals of such quality Amehana found herself fighting her species tendency toward hoarding that got the Western variety in such deep trouble with equally greedy humans. With the handiwork she witnessed, Amehana half expected some elves to pop out of somewhere.

Nope, no elves. Not after a morning of watching. Her distant physical body reminded of a missed opportunity called breakfast and a new due collection called lunch. All this time it seemed nothing had stirred.

Then, she saw them.

Tall, thin, rather Nordic looking. Definitely blond. Amehana groaned. Lemurians on holiday. Lovely. Why weren’t they around Mount Shasta? They rarely left the area. They rarely even came to the surface anymore, much less left the Mount Shasta area… like… dwarves… and elves…

The earlier disturbance was probably just one of their little generators to manipulate the weather. HER weather. In HER bailiwick.

“Feckers...” She grumbled to herself, followed by a few other unpriestessly words but definitely things her very distant ancestor Susanoo would consider clever and thus still at least kami-like. “How dare they?”

She’d read the old records. She had the shattered memories of one of the times she’d been shattered, thanks to Atlantis, Lemuria, and Mu, resulting in all the myriad of her clan. Blood memories. She was aware how close this probably splinter group was beginning to come to that old path. Bad enough humans were already in it, they didn’t need Lemurians finding it again too.

“I’d better report to the council, though it’s not Kamiari-Sai yet. It’s been long since we had to have an emergency gathering. Hopefully it won’t take a month like the yearly does...” Amehana sighed her herself, a plume of cloud spilling from her mouth like flame and steam. Lightning flashed within her as she darkened, her waters gathering in her irritation and her size growing. All unnoticed by those below.

With a flash, she sent a summons, exercising her rarely used right and standing. In the mountains of Rhian the Kagami Arashi flashed within the Purple Shrine and wards activated around the territory of the Elemental Empire. In Draiganpairc the Dragon Stone glowed, calling the witches of the O’Drake bloodline to attention wherever they were scattered around the world. This tugged on the Makay bloodline of Seal Point through their ancient blood oath.

“We have a problem, and the Heart of Storms needs protecting. This I see from within Arashi Kagami.” Her words rolled as thunder through the web of life to each kami.

Below the sea her grandfather looked toward her. Within his stronghold in the mountains her father paled, and dropped his teacup. Together, unknowingly as one, they rose to answer her call, unwilling to leave the last of her clutch to be undefended and risk a repeat of disasters long past.

Wow, over 20 years of posting my work for others to see, and it catches up with me how many places I don't post to as often as I should. Good thing I'm posting here first...

Need more coffee. I'm very glad I've got this to post to before remembering to update those old places. Meanwhile, my boy's messaged me that he's picked up some food to take with us to Mom's so we have food to eat while we are back where I grew up to run our booth the two days of Big Valley Days. It astounds me how far he's come in his development. I wanted a family business when I first fell pregnant with his big sister, I can certainly say that I have one now with how they've helped with different events over the years as they grew.

1. What got you interested in (writing/illustrating/editing, etc)?

Many moons ago before the advent of smartphones and when laptops were about as portable as a ton of bricks, I played other games of a similar ilk and got fed up of them being buggy or the developers buggering off for real life (touch of irony there). So I decided to create my own.

2. What company or companies are you doing work for/with?

Apart from my own none I can say.

3. What projects are you currently working on?

I really..really..really.. want to get DH updated to new shinyness. I’m also doing my Masters degree does that count as a project? Then of course there’s the IVF stuff now that’s a project ;) not really work related but time consuming. Most of the other stuff I can talk about is on github https://github.com/rwky/

4. Do you have any future projects in mind to take on?

Yes tons, of which none I can think of at the moment but there’s a huge list somewhere..

5. What is your favorite project?

DH will always be my fav.

6. Is this career something that you always wanted to do?

Nope I wanted to be a biochemist when I was at college, even got accepted for MSci (Master in Science) at Nottingham University but decided it wasn’t for me.

7. Do you find it difficult, or find some aspects more difficult than others?

Sitting on my arse for 12 hours a day isn’t so good when you’re in your 30s. 30 year old me wishes he could tell 20 year old me to go outside more so the 30 year old me bits would ache less.

I’m pretty well adapted for the long distance asynchronous communication (i.e. email) but being on call 24/7 for the past 10+ years does get a little tiring at times.

8. What is a normal day like for you? Is this your side job or main job?

In the words of Forrest Gump “What’s normal anyways?” I don’t have a normal day, every day is different. Assuming I’m at home I wake up, check my emails/calendar and write today’s todo list, then I get cracking on it. Most days I get through most of it but inevitably some days something blows up (normally multiple things in one go) so then I have to deal with a mountain of shit.

DH is a side job (though was main job for a while years ago) my main job is “making bits of the internet work” (quoting myself), if it’s to do with Linux servers or web programming then I probably do it/have done it.

9. How do you manage balancing this with family and any other work you may have?

I’ll let you into a secret, there are two of me! (Something I often tell clients when they wonder how I can do so much). I don’t really manage to balance I just do what I can and let some off the less urgent stuff fall by the wayside. Adulting sucks ya know!

10. What hobbies do you have?

Is beer a hobby? If so then that. I’m also a fairly avid pokemon go player and also play on steam/nintendo 3ds/nintendo switch. TV is one of my favourite things to relax with especially in the bath. I’m endeavoring to read the Anne McCaffrey Pern series again (takes a while) on kindle.

11. If you could be anything in the world besides this, what would it be?

Can I say a cat? Seems like they have a good life! Though job wise. I would like to work in the space industry.

12. Do you feel that school helped set you up toward following this path in the publishing industry?

Not at all. I did all my relevant qualifications after getting into programming.

13. If you could go back to school is there anything you wish you had paid more attention to?

Nah, I was one of those annoying people that’s good at most academic subjects. TBH IMHO most of high school was a waste, I’m not a fan of how the UK education system works, it’s highly focused on memorizing things instead of being able to use knowledge. Degree level isn’t much better which is why I left Manchester Uni to go to the Open Uni. Manchester’s masters courses are “read this book, remember this algorithm” where as the OU is “Here’s a project, go figure out how to do it”. Since my memory is abysmal these days, in the words of homer simpson “everytime I learn something new it pushes something old stuff out of my brain”, the school of remembering things by rote is useless to me.

14. What advice do you have for the next generation?

* Go outside the world is big weird and wonderful, go see it.

* Don’t fall for rampant consumerism this planet is finite, try not to screw it up for yourselves and future generations.

* Keep your options open, what you think you want to do now probably won’t be what you want in 10, 20, 30 years.

* Relaxxxxxxxx….that thing you’re worrying about probably isn’t that bad (ok sometimes it is but unless you’re dying it’s probably not).

15. What advice do you have for your age peers that may also want to take part in the publishing industry and specifically with your area within it?

Don’t be afraid to take the jump into something new, it can be scary especially when you have a significant other, kids, mortgage etc. but if it’s something you really want to do then go for it, life’s short so try and be happy with it.

16. Is there anything else that you’d like to add that we didn’t discuss?

Pie should be a mandatory food group.

Dragon Shaman: Taming the Blowing Wind has received a feature!

After recording some narration fixes for "The Ian's Realm Saga" and the flash fiction for the Friday audio posting I checked my email while waiting on audacity to open for processing that audio. I found a very nice surprise.

"Dragon Shaman: Taming the Blowing Wind" was included in a YA Dragon Book Wiki. The other eight books listed here look pretty interesting, I will have to look into them. You can read all nine on their list here. They also include a lovely video.

Dragonmas has come to Dragon Hearts

The world of Dragon Hearts crosses over with the world of the Dragon Shaman books as well as the Selkies' Skins books. References are hidden in my books for those knowing what to look for. Thus it seems appropriate to post this here as I am the quest and event writer (though not the coder) for the site.

Dragonmas has hit DH. Dragonclaws, our dear Saint Nicoclaws needs some help up at the North Pole. Fetu is screwing up the balance though! Who will win the battle for Dragonmas? This may or may not result in new lore for future years on the site. Can you afford not to help in the battle? Prizes go out after the end of the event.

Some old art for "The Shadow Chronicles"

While looking for images to represent the three series that the Hounds world building essay is for I came across this image of Angelina (whose Cowan name is Willow Sanchez) that was done for use with "The Shadow Chronicles" by The Ingram for Solstice of 1999. Here Angelina is crowned as Great Shadow, having been awakened to being the reincarnation of the founder of an order in a whole other world than her own and manifestation of the Creator Goddess of that world. This is a very long way from the Cowan Willow Sanchez, who could never figure out why her father became so jumpy whenever magic was brought up and was raised in a normal US home, going to a normal backwoods public school, and brought to the knowledge that magic was real by visits from Singing Serpent, white dragon of Mount Shasta and her past incarnation's advisor Flightessa, a two legged sphinx.

This and images for "Dragon Shaman" and "Selkies' Skins" will be incorporated into the in Second Life image for my essay, to provide the link from the Astral Sector Alpha Art Fair in the quarter sim plot in Calm Ocean.

I will provide a slurl link for the art fair once I have the landmark for the location.

Later I am going to find time to archive some old scans of old drafts of the first novel for "The Shadow Chronicles" for those in my Patreon. I believe those old works will stay Patron Only.

Musings on 3 series, audience, and driving force

I'm thinking tomorrow may be a good day to go over Dragon Shaman 3's chapter outline in between other projects (I often will go between several a day). I don't have writer's block, but there is some increased pressure from those interested in BlowingWind's adventures. If I have that set then when it is time to work on that manuscript it will go swifter.

I also very desperately need to sit down with the book projects that are accepted already, double check the prioritization, and adjust work schedules to take into account upcoming university classes. Selkies' Skins having to split the first book into two books changes the work order significantly.

It is a very good thing that BlowingWind, Kirsty, Ryu, and David get along in the shared mental space (and there have not been any disagreements that Amehana has had to intervene with). Maybe one of these days I'll take some fun time and do up a sketch of 'Wind and Kirsty's arm wrestling bouts. Listening to David and Ryu discuss things during this time [even though David is my mate's (my version of David is slightly different from his version due to the standpoints we think from, and for later stories he is more involved in the creation of he will be labeled co-author if he'll let me) it is entertaining how characters all take on lives of their own outside of their stories and/or RPs]. Although the story starts at a very young age (just entering mid middle school and will go through the end of high school) in some ways it will be more adult since Kirsty herself is an interesting mix of 'adult too early' and 'kid.'

Every author has a specific audience that they write for. I have heard it said that it works best to choose one specific person and write to that person to help keep focus. Selkies' Skins is for my mate (and he's the one that gave me the 'spark' in the first place by giving me a reason to use the selkie I'd had forming in my mind). The Dragon Shaman books started out as for myself. BlowingWind came of life experiences that I had in being a child trying to take back the various cultures that my heritage springs from physically and spiritually. But it also came because of a series I had started before that (as well as other factors). They spring from the end of high school to early college 'energy.'

The Shadow Chronicles still has the first book unfinished as follows BlowingWind's friend (Willow Sanchez/Angelina) from Big Valley. When returned to it will tell the story of awakening to the magical and spiritual world in a very different way than that taken by BlowingWind (born to it) and Kirsty (also born to it). Each of these characters can be said to be an aspect of myself in some ways–some which I'm not fully comfortable speaking of in public since all three lines stem from psychological processes I have gone through at points in my life–but also of you, the reader. The stories that will be in that series have their seeds in a time where my stories were meant for my childhood friends...and we were a very tight bunch. Those spring from my middle school and high school years from roughly 1991 to 1998.

If you are an author, who do you write for? What is your core narrative? Does it change, perhaps changing as you do? Do you feel your own personal psychology has any bearing on how you write?

Why the blog has been quiet

I've been quite busy and not had much in the way of pre-scheduled posts. I have also been horrible at remembering to post over here as to when new content has gone live for the Selkies' Skins webnovel. The manuscript is currently having chapters 37 and 38 worked on. I'm still deciding on whether I should split what was originally going to be book one of the series into two books, dividing book one into the part where she meets the requirements of her 'land water' trials (which does by extension win her into inland seas as well, though not specifically covered) and then the new second book covering her 'sea trials' which grant her the skin. The other adventures covering David's help toward the family, that Greenpeace involvement idea that's been knocking around my head, and so on afterward would then move back into books three, four, and so forth if I divide the series this way.

I'm leery of getting back too much to BlowingWind's family story until I at least get this first book for Selkies' Skins finished. The more I write of it, the more I see that BlowingWind and Kirsty will cross paths in their respective series despite my initial reluctance to have the two parallel experiences in the spiritual/magical/mundane realms have bearing on each other.

I am also writing a sci-fi/fantasy short for Greymouse Publishing for their current anthology project "A World of Worlds." The other authors working on the collection are doing such a great array of "Other World" fiction that it is really interesting seeing what our common prompt is bringing up. I'm really enjoying the project. My contribution revolves around an interdimensional stardragon (not star dragon here) and her reaction to a colony ship enroute to finding safe haven after the death of their last planet generations ago. It is interesting figuring out how I'm going to make her reaction and decision fit into the 6,000 word max.

Much of the time, however, has been spent in getting the apartment ready to have the floors redone. I rather like our carpet out in the living room and bedrooms. Sadly the current word is that the new owners intend to have the whole done in vinyl tile. Looks like the kids and I will have to wear socks in the house if we don't want 'burny feet.' No idea when this is to be done. It could be that they start today or next week. I just want it over so that we can unpack again and productivity can get back to normal for the kids and I. That would also mean that I could get back to reading "The Ihmayran Chronicles" so that I can give Marantha my input on how the story has grown.

School also starts for me again in November, and I'm getting very nervous about it since this also means that the end of my degree program is coming closer. It took a month longer than I anticipated to get the funding issue straight, so it made me very glad that I started the enrollment and aid application early.

Series linking is now on Smashwords

So last night I was working with the Nooks testing some things and went to Smashwords during the process. When I logged in there I discovered that they had given publishers and authors the ability to link the books in their series. I thought that was rather cool. Even cooler?

The option for the same books to be in multiple series (ex: The LOTR series, and The Hobbit + LOTR for The Ring series). With this I was able to link the extant series books. I project that this will be useful also for linking Dragon Shaman, Selkies' Skins, Wavelets (the shorts related to Selkies' Skins) and Shadow Chronicles when those series are ready, as they are interrelated. I still have no idea yet of what I would call the overarching collection of those series... It will bear thought and once I have some ideas I may or may not open up a feedback poll on that point.

This also means that I can group books that should be read together to give additional understanding of how those worlds function. Thus the birth of Spirit Bridges, I'm debating adding in "Stories of Spirits" to give more depth to one of the characters that makes cameo appearances in Dragon Shaman.

Later today the interview with the Cautilis regarding their book "Robots vs. Zombies" goes live (watch for that at 9 AM Pacific Time).

Dragon Shaman Book One: Taming the Blowing Wind approved

I was finally happy with the new print edition of Dragon Shaman #1 through Createspace, and so hit the approve button. In a few weeks it should populate to Amazon, and this first book of the Dragon Shaman series will finally be able to be down to an affordable price for those who have been wanting it in print ($9.99).

This means that it will be time to set up a publishing party to celebrate, of course. Be watching for further news on what we do with that. Meanwhile you can add the new edition to your Goodreads to-read list.

The result of the Divine Inspirations writing party

I, under my Second Life name Amehana Ishtari (Reikaz), have gotten into the SL Newser. Grease Coakes/John Krauss wrote an article on the event which Bixyl Shuftan wrote a very nice introduction for in the main stream of the SL news.

More books were talked about than mine, John's, and the anthology. I also mentioned Michelle Browne's The Stolen as well as others. It was a good turnout with good tunes, including some My Little Pony music. It would be nice to see something like this happen every few months over at the shrine...or even every month if possible. Perhaps small workshops could be managed.

Cover Reveal: Dragon Shaman Book One - Taming the Blowing Wind

Dragon Shaman Book One: Taming the Blowing Wind has received the new cover by Victoria "Salaiek" Davis, the cover artist for Dragon Shaman Book Two: The Smoky Mirror.

May I present the new face for the first book in my series.

I am so excited about this cover. She took the concept that was in the original versions of the cover and took it to a whole new level by bringing in other characters and places from the story. We have Coyote being himself and tailing Blowing Wind, Hawk (whether this is Hawk himself or her father SoaringHawk is up to you...perhaps both), the Dai Tengu (who also shows up in the second book), and a particular red arched bridged, the gap between the worlds... The mountain is Mt. Fuji, but at certain times of the year and from certain angles her sister mountain, Mt. Shasta, looks very similar. Of course, we also have the sea of trees... Every mystical mountain has its own sea of trees around it after all.

BlowingWind Mountain Child slips back and forth between the spiritual world and her own world on a quest for healing and finding the spirit of a lost love. What she must do, break a family curse, answer to the wishes of her former guide is constantly being manipulated by forces beyond her control, both helpful and unhelpful. Ryu finds himself caught up in it and risking the displeasure of his father.

The one on the left was an acrylic painting that I did many years ago, and the one on the right is a colored pencil concept art that actually preceded the painting. I like Victoria's rendition much better.

Current audiobook project: Stories of Spirits

Stories of Spirits is slated for rough editing this next week according to word from the recording studio. I'm really looking forward to hearing how the book is rendered. In the process of having the various books recorded I am learning quite a bit, such as "for the next contract, make sure that there is even more time to account for problems and life events cropping up" and "when sending the script, where there are words with several possible pronunciations...put the pronunciation in brackets behind it or something to help the narrator."

If you're looking for some narration experience, the Dragon Shaman books (one and two currently) are still lacking a narrator, and Selkies' Skins will need one once it is finished. If you've got an ACX account, please feel free to audition. If you don't have an ACX account yet... Why not?
