Book Review: Mystic Tea by Rea Nolan Martin

Mystic TeaMystic Tea by Rea Nolan Martin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I greatly enjoyed this book. To me this is a three main-pronged braided storyline. We follow a “Mother Superior” of a convent who is also the current caretaker of her mentor, the previous Mother Superior, who in turn had served directly under and was mentored by the founder of their Order. Then we also follow the growth stories of two young women who are of vastly different background being called (unknowingly by them) to fill the roles of those two women. One of these women had never before considered becoming a nun and only went to the convent because while she was in jail getting sober she received a divine angelic calling/revelation. This young woman also happened to be an unknowing seer, having chalked everything up to drug induced hallucinations her entire life. The other woman was a twin that had absorbed her sister in utero, but grew up with the spirit of her sister stuck to her. Then we come to a fourth plot, the growth of the order itself. There is also a fifth plot, the growth of the individual aged remaining handful of nuns.

As a person whose skeleton has shown evidence of having absorbed a twin, I can relate with that character, although I did not become the religious zealot of a nun she was at the point of meeting the character. I was granted a firm support network whereas she was not. I also found myself identifying with our current on-paper Mother Superior, being a biological mother and a matriarch for my tiny branch of my main family. With similar responsibilities it is an extremely easy thing to do. And yet I also found myself identifying with our untaught seer, since I also would speak to rivers, although it was more often trees where I grew up, and found myself experiencing an interest amount of luck.

I found this to be a liberating tale. I rode the highs and lows of the characters and grumbled at them when they dug their heels on things that they needed to come to grips with. I loved the amount of simple life magic, the angels being a real thing, the transcendence (literal) within the tale. I think this would actually be very deserving a tale to be taken into high school senior English classes for reading and discussion. The religious tone, despite being such an obvious part of the story, also clearly separates the religious from the spiritual… a discussion that needs to be had with young men and women at the point in time that they are figuring themselves out and getting ready to set off on their own foray into adulthood and what it means to be human.

"Treasure of the Ancient Wizards" by Alexander Saunders available to preorder in ebook

"Treasure of the Ancient Wizards" by Alexander Saunders is available now for pre-orders in ebook format. It goes live via Smashwords on September 3rd and on Amazon on September 4. I am still waiting for the physical proof to arrive for the print edition. An audiobook format is planned for later.

When a young Alex hears a mysterious voice and follows it, his discovery leads him on an epic quest to retrieve a treasure he hopes will help his family. When he and his friends enter into a magical world they together learn about bravery, love, trust, and dependability. The biggest question is, can five teenagers do what many adults have not? Can they get back home if they succeed? If they can are they even going to want to go home after entering a world where unicorns, dragons, witches, wizards, merfolk, fauns, and other such mythical beings are real?

Written from the first person point of view as a young Alex retells his story to his mysterious audience, this tale was crafted for the entire family to enjoy. Perfect for a bedtime read to children, adults can also enjoy this on their own for a moment of respite. Our young hero still holds that passion for justice that many of us allow to die down to an ember but also holds the tenacity to keep pushing to make the world a better place.

A. Buddell has this to say about it:

A surprising read that was hard to put down, this book had impressive scope and a heart of gold.

When a poor boy suddenly finds himself in possession of a magical treasure map, his entire life changes. He gains the ability to do magic, and together with his four best friends, sets off on a perilous adventure through Magicalworld. Along the way they'll learn lessons about trusting your friends, helping others, and keeping an open mind; all the while avoiding deadly traps, and facing unique magical creatures. With so many obstacles in their way, can the group - and their friendship - make it to the Treasure of the Ancient Wizards?

Interview With Oscar Wager II And Introducing "The Institute"

Today's interview is with author Oscar Wager II. I was lucky enough to be one of the beta readers when he was ready to have others read it for feedback during his development progress. After publishing, he agreed to an interview regarding his newest book, "The Institute," which is just recently available on Amazon. Don't forget to request your local bookstore to order you a copy, which helps them know that it exists and what sorts of books to order for their stock!

The Interview

Q: Are you an author, poet, illustrator, editor, game writer, game creator, publisher, or fill multiple roles? If you have multiple roles in the publishing community then which ones are they? If you have multiple roles feel free to answer each question with sections for each role. The more complete this is the more we learn about you.

A: I am an author, a poet (although I haven’t written any poetry in a while), and I create my own book covers.

Q: What project of yours do you most want us to know about?

A: My latest novel, "The Institute," released 10/12/2021.

It's about a 12-year-old boy who is put in a mental hospital because of an unfortunate incident that he suffered. While he is there, they thought he could use a lesson in how actions have consequences. Something his parents couldn't seem to teach him.

Q: Do you have a website or websites you are associated with or where your work can be found? If so please post it here.

A: Oscar's newest book can be found on both Amazon and Barnes & Nobels.

Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Institute-Oscar-Wager-II-ebook/dp/B09J46TSTY

Amazon Author Page (please note that it often takes a few days and an author claim request to link new books to the correct author pages, so it may be a few days before it syncs): https://www.amazon.com/Oscar-Wager-II/e/B005K9AIEY

B&N: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-institute-oscar-wager-ii/1140366509

He can be followed on Facebook to stay abreast of his future projects. https://www.facebook.com/oscarwageriiauthor/

Q: What got you interested in writing, illustrating, editing, layout, creating games or whatever other aspect of the publishing industry (either book or gaming publishing)? If you have multiple roles please feel free to tell us about each.

A: I started writing short stories in the third grade. One was actually “published" in the school’s anthology. I heard from a friend that they still used that anthology to show third-graders short stories from past students, ten years later.

I didn't write for a long time after school. I went into the tech field, as a computer programmer. I started to write a little poetry, here and there, and my friends and family loved it. I started writing serial poems for Halloween, in 13 night installments. From there I went to prose and published my first novel in February 2020.

Q: What company or companies are you doing work for or with? Do you freelance? Are you able to support yourself only with your writing or do you have to work other jobs?

A: I am an independent author. I don’t support myself with my writing. My day job is as a caregiver for my wife.

Q: What projects are you currently working on, if you are allowed to speak of them and promote them?

A: My next novel is about alien government conspiracies and cover-ups that may have many believers, skeptics, and a few government agencies up in arms shall we say. It will definitely be a new twist to the old stories.

Q: Do you have any future projects already in mind to take on?

A: I have a few ideas rattling around in my head. Including a couple of follow-up books to my first novel, With Darkness Comes Trouble.

Q: What is or was your favorite project?

A: I think it's my current project, tentatively titled Abducted: The Lies Behind The Truth

Q: Is this career something that you always wanted to do? If not then what did you originally want to do?

A: I wanted to be a computer programmer for as long as I can remember. When I was laid off after almost 20 years, I think it was a blessing for me. It opened my eyes and made me see I could use my creative side.

I don’t think people outside of the tech industry realize how much creativity goes into programming. It can be very cut and dry at times, but some you need to use your imagination to build code.

Q: Do you find it difficult, or find some aspects more difficult than others?

A: When I am writing dialog for a child, I find that difficult. Here is a 53-year-old man trying to think and speak like a 12-year-old. The same thing with my women characters.

Other than that, once the creative juices start flowing, I can sit down and write for a couple of hours no problem, unless my wife needs me.

Q: What is a normal day like for you? Is this your side job or main job?

A: I usually work on my writing at night, after my wife is asleep. That's when I get the most uninterrupted time to myself.

Q: How do you manage to balance this with family and any other work you may have?

A: Since my main job is taking care of my wife, she gets top priority, always. I have taken her down time to allow myself the chance to work on my writing.

Q: If you could be anything in the world besides this, what would it be?

A: Retired football player.

Q: Do you feel that school helped set you up toward following this path in the publishing industry?

A: Yes and no. While it gave me the basics of writing it never encouraged my creativity past elementary school.

Q: If you could go back to school is there anything you wish you had paid more attention to?

A: I was awkward and shy in high school. I might go back and try to be more outgoing. As far as paying more attention to anything, that's a tough one for me.

Q: What advice do you have for your age peers that may also want to take part in the publishing industry and specifically with your area within it?

A: Try. It can’t hurt you. So what's the worst that can happen? You find out you're not good enough. Okay, at least you know. If you don't try you will always wonder what if.

Who knows, you may even succeed.

Q: Did you do your cover by yourself? If it was a cooperative piece who did the art and who did the rest?

A: I did it myself, using free-to-use images.

Q: What is your favorite genre to write? What is your least favorite to write?

A: When I first started, I thought, because I love horror so much, that would be it. Turns out, I like thrillers. Supernatural, psychological, and now government conspiracies. Who knew?

I don’t think I could ever write romance.

Double Play Flash Fiction Fridays Podcast Catch Up Day

Last Friday's Flash Fiction Fridays episode was a little slow in actually managing to get recorded and ready.

Flash Fiction Fridays #20: "I Hate Updates" and "Delusion"

The first is every college or university student's worst nightmare. The second was written for a Flash Fiction Month prompt that required an unfair rebirth or fate, and explores karma.

This Friday's episode has "Just a Little Something" and "Turnabout" as more comedic offerings. The first gives us a glimpse into the personal lives of Chinese deities and immortals, and what chaos/order they get up to, and was written for one of the Flash Fiction Month challenges. The second is a Coyote/Kokopelli tale Teresa Garcia wrote to fill her daily requirement and in honor of those two tricksters.

Flash Fiction Fridays episodes 17 and 18

Much has happened that delayed the usual releases. After mama Cat's death I then experienced the death of a spirit/soul sister AND THEN the death of a beloved aunt. I intend to get one of the interviews recorded sometime tonight or tomorrow in preparation for Sunday.

Ian's Ream Saga Part 3 releases August 27, 2019

Part III of "The Ian's Realm Saga" by D.L. Gardner is expected to go live and be available for download August 27 of 2019. This is the final part of "The Ian's Realm Trilogy" book that I have worked so long to prepare the audiobook version of. It brings immense satisfaction to see that project ready for the push. I also highly recommend the other books of the series. It was a fun project to be part of and narrate for.

I have seen the first two parts on Audiobooks.com and I believe that FindAWay, the distributor that she has chosen, has those on other venues as well, and this will join them.

Ian's Realm Saga Part Two is available

Part Two of the Ian's Realm Saga is finished, ready, and available for purchase and download on Dianne Gardner's Gumroads store. You can listen to the story on any device that plays MP3 and are not locked into streaming only (unlike some venues can be).

It has been a pleasure working on this project. Part Three is in production and available for pre-order directly from the author. By ordering from the author directly you ensure that she receives more, especially in projects where narrators or illustrators are paid up front. Please also check out her other projects.

Flash Fiction Fridays #13: The Story of Flame and The Shrine of the Gatekeeper

This Friday the flash fictions presented are once again set within what is now the Dreaming Twilight universe.

"The Story of Flame" is an older flash fiction that Lacy/Aria wrote before I discovered and became involved in Nisa. Here we learn about the moment Flame passed from a Nisean Guardian and Ascended to one of the Spirits of the Land.

"The Shrine of the Gatekeeper" by Teresa Garcia (myself) tells of the moment that Raikou first entered into Nisa after making the long passage through the mists and moutains (the Dreaming Twilight) that sealed the version of her land the known Raikou hails from.

You can help support the parcels of the lands including the current iteration of Nisa maintained by Dreaming Twilight in Ontario (as we slowly purchase the sim in bits and spurts) by visiting our locations inworld. If you open up about land and see it is a parcel owned by Dreaming Twilight than that is part of our collective. If you visit inworld you can send Linden dollars to Java Charisma which will go toward paying tier. Or, you can donate toward the tier so we can continue unfolding the varous lands and storylines by sending tips over Paypal to java.charisma@gmail.com.

Flash Fiction Fridays #11: The Sock Drawer

You can also listen for when it uploads to the Podcast at www.flashfictionfridays.com. Sadly, that I cannot automate because of the host.

The Sock Drawer
By Teresa Garcia

The warm night always came to an end. Day by day the drawer would be pulled out with a deafening rumble. Every day they would loose at least one pair and sometimes more to the giant. Sometimes a fresh pack would be nestled in among them, the babies too young to be released into their cottony swarm. When and if the giant returned any of those it took they always returned worn and battle scarred, smelling of bleach with tales of horror. Not every pair returned whole.
Marriage, though the usual social arrangement in their colony, was not permanent. Nor was it forever. Mates wore out, gaining gaping holes from too tight shoes, unshorn nails, and the teeth of dogs and cats. This did not even scratch the surface of the threat of drowning and dashing to pieces in the washer. Dissolving happened all to often to those they knew, as did washing over the side of the tub into the unknown depths below where the screams of the damned still sounded.
Collectively each pair and single shook themselves as the drawer once more slid out. Who would it be today to suffer abuse and possibly die? Everyone prepared to cling to everyone else, never giving up the hope of peace. An especially venerable pair was ripped from the mass to the pained gasps of the horde. Weakly they flopped goodbyes. The new patriarchs, a mated pair of threadbare right socks saluted their predecessors. No one hoped for their return. It would be a final walk somewhere, and either dissolving in the wash or a languishing fate in the Bin.
Stifled wails choked in flattened and rolled throats. Rustling came from the half open bag on the left hand side where the thicker ones tried to ask the elders for an explanation.
No one dared answer them. The drawer was still open and they must never let the giant hear them. Only bad things could happen, like the day it overheard the underwear jeering about getting fat. An entire drawer, wiped out in a matter of minutes!
Why was the drawer open so long?
A thin, sad plastic bag nestled down on top of the pile, full of new denizens of this layer of hades. The door finally slid shut and the socks all looked at each other in horror. Surely these new inmates, so thin and delicate, would only see a matter of days when it came to their use. But was that a blessing or a curse?

Flash Fiction Fridays #8: Playfulness (written) and Wikatcha (reading)

The below flash fiction is set in the Selkies’ Skins universe sometime after Kirsty and David have graduated, married, and started their life together. I have left it intentionally unclear as to exactly how long after graduation. It is long enough for a house in the once again village of Seal Point to be finished near the home Kirsty grew up in.
Playfulness
David rummaged in the impeccably clean pantry looking for his tinned fish. Kirsty was at the office doing whatever her father had called her in for. Her skin was another matter. She had left it to keep him company since she expected a boring day of paperwork and meetings. Said skin was very enthusiastic about staying home, causing mischief, and preventing him from being too sucked into his own pursuits.
Kirstyskin never liked hanging on a peg pretending to be a cloak, at least not since she’d gained enough strength to move around on her own. He may, or may not, have contributed to this. It was so hard not to spoil such a cute skin, especially when it so exuberantly communicated things Kirsty herself tried to be more adult and circumspect about. He still couldn’t understand why anyone in their right mind would hide a skin from the corresponding selkie, wife or not. Marsali’s husband had deprived himself and her of a great deal, in his opinion.
“Ork! Ork!” The skin attempted to whisper. The barking did not translate well into a whisper at all. She hauled up on her tail and clapped her flippers at him excitedly. Her front gaped open to reveal her smooth suede inside. Sparkling blue eyes glinted at him.
“I’m looking dear, I’m looking.” He sighed to himself. “I knew I shouldn’t have said the magic word…”
“Feesh! Feeeesh! Feeeeeeeesh?” The skin flopped down and rolled over and over around the kitchen behind him. How and what she filled herself with whenever she’d do this he had no clue. Kirstyskin did not exactly hold still long enough for him to ever satisfy his curiosity about that.
“Yes dear. I’m looking for our feesh.” David’s lips lifted in a smile that released his chuckle. “I will make sure you are fat and shiny when the rest of you comes home.”
“Feeeeeesh…” The rambunctious skin calmed herself and plopped a head on his foot, nibbling at his ankle through his socks.
“I’m not a fish, silly selkie skin.” His rummaging finally yielded fruit.
“Are. Wolffish.” She rumbled at him.
“Bad pun.” He grinned as he looked down at the very self satisfied smirk on the skin’s face. Kirstyskin blew an impish raspberry at him.
One can of little anchovies was still hidden. Unfortunately now she knew the hiding spot. It was just a matter of time before she’d sneak up there in the middle of the night with a chair. He’d have to consult Imp later for ideas on where he could hide Emergency Fish so he’d be more likely to have spares. David’s musing as he made his way to the corner he preferred to flop with her in was interrupted by a flying streak of white.
Said streak humped along the floor at top speed from the kitchen to the living room barking gleefully around her mouthful.
“I thought we were sharing!”
Laughter floated back to him and thumping started up the steps. His own laughter joined hers as he started running after her.

Ame's Bookshelf Review: Berkley Street by Ron Ripley

Book Review

Title: Berkley Street: Supernatural Horror with Scary Ghosts & Haunted Houses (Berkley Street Series Book 1)

Author: Ron Ripley

Where to get: https://amzn.to/2Nxf1aW

Star Rating: 5

Age Rating (IMO): YA

This was a well done creepy story.  Parts of it did not hit me as hard as they should have. That may have to do with reading in bed with the heater going and surrounded by dogs though, so I was not given the solitude to fully appreciate all that had been intended to be scary. There were still several things that broke through though. Vivienne was one of those things that managed to get through the protection of doggie sentries. So did the explanation tale of how Carl came to become one of the ghosts.

Some are going to be confused and off-put by the way the story is arranged. There are times that flashbacks take place where we experience with the characters an important past event that would have made no sense if it were discovered in chronological order. They are clearly delineated though and the author does a good job of moving us back and forth as non jarringly as possible. I will certainly be reading more of this series.

Flash Fiction Fridays: "Trade" and "Fish Army"

Fish Army was last week's written flash fiction posted to my Patreon. You can listen to it being read here in this video.

This week's written flash fiction is "Trade" from within the world of Selkies' Skins in a different time and location. This flash fiction touches on the seal folk. Long ago a Patron and friend asked for a tale of selkies in a Native American milieu. This is a long awaited glimpse into the life of one of the seal folk somewhere on the Eastern coast of America.

Flash Fiction: Trade

Waves crashed against her rock, froth spraying up to dampen her. The sun was warm here, though the ever present sea breeze did what it could to take the warmth away. Beside her spread out her skin to bake to let the oils seep in to fur and flesh. Her dreams whispered. Eyes watched her from the shore before slipping tentatively into canoes. She smiled as she watched them and sang sweetly. So long as they minded themselves she did not mind calling forth the fish. She liked to watch them toss their nets and spears. Safety traded for food.

"The Starr Family's Ice Cream Creation" is available

I notice that the latest children's book I illustrated has been posted on that publisher's website as available. In this sweet story a family explores the world of ice cream in search of new flavors and even goes to Italy as part of their search. It was a fun one to color and one with gave me a good place to implement some color techniques I had been wanting an excuse to use. I will point out that I did not do the text layout on this cover piece.

In this short children's tale we meet the Starr Family. They love ice cream so much that they go on adventures to find new flavors. Each member has a different idea. This even includes a family vacation (and a little implied romance for mommy and daddy) to Italy.

Mythical Minstrelsy volume one is released in Color Print Edition

Teresa Garcia's "Mythical Minstrelsy" is available in the first volume on Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon. Amazon also has a paperback copy available for purchase. Fueled as a side project by her Patreon these yearly anthologies are collections of poetry, art, and short stories. Some of these are for within Kirsty, BlowingWind, and Willow AKA Angelina's shared world. These will not contain her progress on the current Selkies' Skins manuscript. Patreon patrons get to have yearly copies of the anthologies as one of their perks. For those more interested in just reading the collected works though there is the anthology itself.

This is the first volume of a series. It is hoped to have the final layout of both the print and ebook editions of volumes 2 and 3 ready within the next few months.

Project Updates

Mythical Minstrelsy
Within a week we should be seeing the print edition of Mythical Minstrelsy, volume 1 (the 2015-2016 volume) hitting Amazon. It will take a few days longer generally for the print edition to link to the ebook edition. Hopefully soon I will be able to have layout ready for volume 2 print and ebook as I try to catch up my own backlog (so many projects get prioritized over my own writings). I will post again once I see that it has become available.

Illustrations
In other news I am working on color for panels 11 through 15 of the Starr Family's Ice Cream Creation with PenIt! Publications. After the completion of that children's book project I will begin the art for the next Moey book, also with that publishing house.

Selkies' Skins
I champ at the bit to get back to the current volume of the series.

The Ian's Realm Saga Trilogy
Work is still ongoing with getting clean tracks for the audiobook version of D.L. Gardner's classic book. It has not been as quiet nor as calm a summer as I needed for the rerecording of the chapters.

Dragon Hearts RPG
There have been a few delays in getting to writing the second part of the current split questline. I need to check in the work tickets to see if the gamesite owner/coder has had a change to work on the code for the first part of this installment in Fetu's saga and if anything is ready for testing.

Press Release: Astral Sector Alpha Art Fair June 25-July 3

I forgot to post this here on its own, although I remembered to submit it to Bixyl Shuftan (as Amehana Ishtari, my Second Life legacy name) for the SL Newser.

Press Release: Astral Sector Alpha Art Fair June 25-July 3

Astral Sector Alpha is holding an art fair June 25th to July 3rd.

Astral Sector Alpha, also known as ASA or the Astrids, is a community of artists of different stripes that originated in Second Life, although not all of the members are within Second Life. They also have a Discord presence and do live readings every other Saturday over Discord (as not everyone can successfully use SL voice reliably) starting at 6 PM SLT and gather in world for camaraderie during the reads. ASA's goal is to nurture each other's creativity and to provide a good grounding for artists, writers, and other creators to grow within and draw encouragement from. Members are encouraged to start their own projects.

ASA has worked with several small libraries in the past to provide reading exchanges and art/writing contests, including with the Trotsdale library. Amehana Ishtari's past writing workshops and a Haiku anthology between cooperating Second Life libraries, available for free on Smashwords at https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/542449 are examples of the sort of projects that members launch.

Art of several types is on display at the current art fair, things represented are visual art in the form of drawings and photograpy, jewelery, images created in blender, textual offering to be read either by the author or by volunteers, and "glitch photography" which is a new art form developed by Danielderv Resident, which has even had an article published about it in a university level publication. The building itself was created for the art fair.

For inworld readings of the content in the fair, readings will happen from the 30th to the 3rd at 5 PM SLT to ensure that all that was submitted has a chance to be shared.

This art fair is also intended to kick off a weekly magazine format. For more details about that particular endeavor talk to Danielderv Resident.

Selkies' Skins #1: Castle and Well ebook release

Today is the long awaited (finally) release day for the ebook editions of the first book in the "Selkies' Skins" series, "Castle and Well." The print edition is still awaiting receipt of the cover art from Samantha Buckley, but it is hoped that it will arrive soon.

Kirsty has little choice in her fate, only how it will manifest. There are tests to pass, a place that she may have to occupy prematurely if her visions prove true, and a need to earn her sealskin to be complete. Will Etain return safe to port, and will Kirsty survive her training and test? There are complications along the way, will she be able to stay on the course she's trying to set? In this first book of what is intended to be a trilogy Kirsty must ultimately go down the Lady's well for the first of her tests of fitness, while also having to balance school, family, and a certain young lad.

For additional side stories, please look in the Selkies' Skins Wavelets stories.

It is also author Teresa Garcia's birthday today. On the 13th was author Marantha D. Jenelle's (she is missed) and also cover artist Victoria "Salaiek" Davis.

Selkies' News

While we are still waiting on the cover art for the print edition of the book, I have scheduled the release of the ebook edition with the ebook's cover for March 16th, my birthday. Cross your fingers, this was originally planned for December/January release. Those that participated in the Kickstarter and chose an ebook as their preferred method of reading/delivery will have their copies in the next few weeks. I am still hoping for the print edition's cover art to be done soon so that I can include the front of that in the file.

The print edition will be ready as soon as Samantha is able to deliver her art to me. My apologies to everyone that has been waiting for so long, as we are several weeks behind schedule for release due to life events. However, be cheered that Illya Leonov is making good and fast progress on the audio edition.
